Getting ready to do some painting is a big job! You want to insure that you purchase all of the correct materials, or you could be costing yourself extra time and money. You know how to paint, what the paint types are, and the significance of certain colors. Now you need to know which materials to buy.
Paintbrushes:
We can’t stress this enough – do not skimp on your paint brush! Purchasing a cheap paint brush means you are guaranteed to have to pick back through your paint job, pulling out stray hairs that have come away from the brush. It’s a tedious, annoying process, that can be avoided altogether by purchasing a nice paint brush. Your safest bet, look at the costs. The more expensive the brush, the better it is. Purdy or Linzer are great brands that are available at most hardware stores.
Paint Rollers:
Again, avoid cheap rollers. The pressure you have to exert on the brush can cause it to break after repeated use, so you want to make sure to get something that will stand up to constant wear and tear. Your roller is what you paint the majority of your wall with. Cheap ones can break at the handle and cause the roller cover to be right on top of your hands! And as much as you love that blue color, you don’t need it all over your skin if you can help it.
Roller Covers:
The roller cover you purchase is going to depend on a number of factors. Namely; the type of paint you’re using, and the surface you are painting. You want to use synthetic covers for most latex paints, and natural covers for oil based paints. Blended covers can be used with all paints. The pile of the roller is what pertains to the surface you’re painting; very smooth for metal doors/plaster, smooth/semi-smooth for drywall (ie – if your walls are flat/not textured, you want smooth. If your walls are textured, like orange peel, you want semi-smooth), semi-rough for wood/tile, rough for textured ceilings and stucco, and very rough for concrete, brick, and fences. The idea is to have the roller be thick enough to put paint into all of the little creases of rougher surface.
Those are the basic guidelines for purchasing materials for painting! As long as you have the right tools, you’ll have an easy time of painting.
