An emerging trend among interior designers is to paint your ceiling. More people are beginning to realize that the ceiling does not have to be popcorn and off-white. Painting your ceiling is a bold statement, and can do everything from brighten a room and make it more spacious, to make it seem more cavernous and cozy. It’s can totally transform your living space, if you’re brave enough to try it.
END GOAL
What do you want the room to be when you’re finished? A bright, airy child’s playroom? A warm, quiet bedroom? No matter what color you have on the walls, the new ceiling color is going to dominate the room – so do lots of research on how colors make you feel before you get started.
COLOR CHOICE
You’ll want to be especially careful when choosing this color, as the process is going to take much longer and be more tedious than traditional wall painting. Know how tired your arms get when you are painting the top portion of the wall along the ceiling? If you paint the ceiling, you’re going to be looking at that times a thousand! Given that it is such a difficult process; it would be beneficial to test an area of the ceiling with the color. Reason being, that little color swatch you get from the hardware store? Looking at it under their fluorescent lights can to be a totally different color when it’s on your ceiling, so you want to be absolutely certain of the color you choose.
PREPARATION
You’re going to be lifting a loaded brush above your head and rolling it around on the ceiling, so you want to make sure that all of your floors and furniture are covered. A drop-cloth is a painters best friend! Don’t just grab old bed sheets, as some people try to do, because sheets are thin, and a big enough drop of paint will simply bleed through the fabric onto whatever is underneath. You want thick painters cloths, or plastic. That way you are absolutely certain that your surfaces are protected.
