An architectural coating is simply a term in the painting contractors’ world that refers to any paint or coating used on stationary structures, including homes. This segment of the paint industry easily makes up more than half of the total volume of coatings produced annually, making it the largest segment in the country. Architectural coatings or architectural paints include paints, specialty coatings and sealers and are intended for on-site application by painting contractors and come in a wide range of architectural grade finishes for both interiors and exteriors.
Architectural coatings have both functional and aesthetic purposes. They are made to provide a protective layer on the surface of buildings or homes and serve a supportive structural role. They provide protection against water and improve the resistance of dirt on the primary structure surface and ultimately enhance the overall beauty of the building or structure they are applied to.
Architectural coatings are classified based on their function and composition. They can be classified into several different categories such as inks, ceramics, paints, lacquers, enamel, powder, primers, stains, sealers, and varnishes. Below is a breakdown of some of these categories:
Inks – Inks include liquids, powders, or transfer tapes that are printed, sprayed, rolled, or transferred onto substrates or media for printing, marking, and creating graphics and patterns.
Ceramics – Ceramics consist of oxides, carbides, nitrides, carbon, and other non-metals with high melting points. They provide resistance to thermal shock, oxidation, and chemical corrosion.
Paints – a large category of coatings including pigmented liquids or powders used to protect and/or beautify substrates. The two general classifications of paint are enamels and lacquers.
Lacquers – Lacquers are coatings made from the clear sap of the lacquer tree that produce a hard, durable finish to decorate and protect wood, metal, and other surfaces.
Enamel – Enamel air-dries to a hard, usually glossy, finish and is used for coating surfaces that are outdoors or otherwise subject to hard wear or drastic variations in temperature.
Powder – Powder coating is a high-quality coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. They are typically applied electrostatically and then cured under heat.
